Xooming along

So I've finally acquired an android tablet to with my Android phone. I went down to my local ebgames yesterday and bought myself a Motorola Xoom.

Of course the first thing I did was to root the thing and put ice cream sandwich on it. It's running smoothly so far and I'll be looking into what else I can do with it.

ABC on Android

I use both Android and iDevices, my phone is a Nexus S running the latest Gingerbread (2.3.6) and I own an iPod Touch and a first generation iPad. I'm also an avid consumer of the ABC online services, mostly streaming ABC News 24 in the kitchen and accessing the ABCs large library of video and audio podcasts.

However generally I don't use my android devices to do this, why? Because the ABC has concentrated all its mobile efforts into building iDevice compatible apps. I've added screen caps from both the Android and iDevice apps below:

Wanted: UI Person for help with OSS Android Project

Okay here it is, my official cry for help.

As you know I've been tooling around with two android specific projects - planningalertsAU and the openaustraliasearchdroid. Both of the projects are now functional however they are suffering from the fact that my UI skills are almost as good as my ability to levitate. I've included a couple of screen shots from the Planning Alerts app to show you what I mean.

Planning Alerts AU - in the Marketplace

So today I finally took the plunge and submitted my first app to the Android Market. Its the Planning Alerts AU app I've been working on for the past few months.

Just do a search in the market place for Planning Alerts AU

Android Market: Still closed to Australian Paid Apps

Sigh, so close and yet so far.

This morning a message hit the Android Australia mailing list claiming that Australia had been added to the small list of countries that  were allowed to sell Apps in the Android market.

Alas, it wasn't so. Instead it appears that Australias addition to the list was in error and we are still part of the great unwashed who are unable to take advantage of googles sales infrastructure.

Planning Alerts Android App - Version 0.6

Okay here's the next release of Planning Alerts AU.

This version now checks to see if GPS or Wireless Location Detection services are activated and prompts you if they aren't. Changed the Icon and marker graphics (if anyone wants to contribute graphically, please feel free :)).

So here it is:

Planning Alerts AU - 0.6

Planning Alerts Android App - Version 0.4

Okay, here's version 0.4 of planningalertsau, the android app I'm building based on the Planning Alerts API.

In this version I've fixed the following:

Map crashes when there are 0 alerts

Planning Alerts Android App - Version 0.3

I finally had enough time to sit down and have another crack at the Android App I'm building based on the very cool planning alerts api.

This new release has added basic google maps integration. Once you have successfully returned a list of alerts you can hit the menu button and select Map to view the various alerts.

How to use it:

OpenAustralia Search Droid - 0.2 Available

Just a quick note to let everyone know that version 0.2 is now out.

This version has definitely fixed the 1.5/1.6 version installation problems as well as the JSONArray issues I was having before.

I've also been asked to consider building an iphone version of the app. I'm looking at what's required, but the first step seems to be download 2.3GB of code (including iPhone Emulator and IDE), which makes Androids development environment seem positively anorexic by comparison.
