Convergence, this is not how you do it
So the big studios have announced their answer to netflix and other internet nasties:
They are going to offer online streaming "rentals" (which I'm assuming means access passes to content which stays on their server and is streamed through approved players/apps) to people. Whoo hoo! Excellent! How much did you say?
$30.00 USD for a two month rental.
Yup, for the "premium" content they are going to charge people $30US for the privilege of streaming video to their computer or tv. Oh and thanks to geo-location based markets this will only be on offer to people in the US (and those who know how to setup a US based VPN).
Whoo flapping Hoo.
Seriously, does anyone in Hollywood think this is going to stop people from hitting the interntubes and the bittorrents for the latest blockbuster? That niche "online content producer" just keeps looking better and better. The people who understand this niche and can conquer the challenges associated with it are going to stomp all over the old studios and networks.
